Terasen Gas

Recognizing Friuch Consulting's experience with the regulated utility sector, Terasen Gas (formerly BC Gas) retained Aaron Cruikshank, Principal of Friuch Consulting's services to assist their Demand Side Management team. Vancouver Island is a jurisdiction where home-heating oil (essentially, heavy diesel fuel) still represents a significant portion of the home heating market. Terasen Gas was concerned about advertising campaigns on Vancouver Island that saw home heating oil providers claim that their new mixes of home heating oil and biodiesel "burned cleaner" than natural gas.

Friuch Consulting was able to bring together research from US and Canadian federal government labs that publicly debunked the claims of these heating oil companies. For some measurable pollutants, the new home heating oil mix did burn "cleaner" than natural gas but our research revealed to the public that the definition of "clean" isn't as narrow as Terasen's competitors were portraying it. In fact, for several key pollutants home heating oil is much "dirtier" than natural gas.

This research allowed Terasen Gas' Demand Side Management team to develop a public information campaign that laid the facts out in plain view so that consumers could make an informed decision.
