Brendon Wilson

I’ve known Brendon since 2004 when we shared a common work area in grad school at Simon Fraser University. I e-mailed Brendon on August 6, 2008 and asked him the following questions. His responses are listed below my questions:

1. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Cranbrook, B.C., a little town of 25K people in the East Kootenay region.

2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?

When I was a kid, I had a brief flirtation with the idea of being a physiotherapist. I can’t recall the exact logic behind this obsession, but I can guess that it had something to do with the time the physiotherapist at my father’s hospital dipped my hand in wax, as well as made my hand jump around with some electrodes. I believe “cool!” was about as deep as my thought process went when it came to considering a career at that time. I later flirted with the idea of being an architect, until I realized I’d be at school forever and that I wasn’t really interested in building, you know, buildings.

3. How would you describe to someone like me what you do for a living?

I consult with companies working in the software industry, and provide services like business case development, product marketing planning, competitive analysis, and training material creation.

4. How would you describe what you do to someone who has no idea what your industry is about?

I figure out what problems people and businesses have, and what kinds of software my clients could build that solves those problems, how they could tell people about their software, and how they could help the people who sell their software sell more of it.
