David Clement

I’ve only known David a few months but he’s a very impressive guy. There is a lot of overlap in our professional networks and I’m surprized we haven’t met before this year. I e-mailed David on August 6, 2008 and asked him the following questions. His responses are listed below my questions:

1. Where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small town (pop 400 when we got there) called Woolgoolga. The high tech. centerpiece of the town was the local hardware store.

2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?

A scientist who makes stuff. I worked my way up from Lego, wood working, then metal working, until discovered electronics and computers in my early teens.

3. How would you describe to someone like me what you do for a living?

Technology architect who is constantly probing the edge of computer technology, bringing new ideas to life as software/hardware products and solutions. My passions are in computer graphics, high performance computing, software architecture and methodology.

(Shameless plug)

I have created many products and solutions over the years but my favorites are:

  • The first real time virtual set, which I built for the BBC in 1992, which was used, live, for several years.
  • Broadcast quality 3d graphics rending system which I developed for BBC world service in 1993. This produced all their broadcast graphics for several years.
  • Co-authored the BBC’s version of Google Earth in 1993.
  • Fully automated, AI driven, real time control system that ran Showcase Television live to air in 1995.
  • Complete implementation of the ebXML stack as a highly graphical software solution in 2001.
  • Highly visual web services integration platform which included a several visual languages.

4. How would you describe what you do to someone who has no idea what your industry is about?

Someone who works with computers to create new and different ways of doing things.
