David Roughley

I have worked with David on a number of projects since we first met in 2004. He’s a cool guy. I e-mailed David on August 6, 2008 and asked him the following questions. His responses are listed below my questions:

1. Where did you grow up?

Northern England. A small industrial town surrounded by countryside. It was easy to escape into the fields and hills.

2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I can’t remember. I was more interested in ideas and thoughts than becoming someone or something. I left school at 16 but read classic works like Aristotle’s Ethics and Ovid’s Metamorphosis. I read Freud and I read the Bible with equal curiosity. I liked the idea of being an architect when I was a bit older, but science gradually took precedence.

3. How would you describe to someone like me what you do for a living?

I’m a consultant with over 35 years of experience working in a wide variety of science and technology fields. I’ve been a lab assistant, a researcher, and a scientific equipment development engineer. I’ve spend almost half of that career looking at commercialization of new and emerging technology. Most of my current work is related to developing technologies in Canada working with government agencies by referral.

4. How would you describe what you do to someone who has no idea what your industry is about?

In this generation we are all becoming saturated with “information”. It is a new phenomena driven by the IT revolution. The long-term societal effects are still unknown. In science and technology I help decision makers to ask the right questions, and help them understand the risks associated with their decisions.
