Mini Bio: Noulan Bowker
Noulan is an independent Management Consultant based in Vancouver, BC. Check out his website (link).

I haven’t known Noulan (pronounced “nolan”) for very long but we have a mountain of mutual acquaintances in the very small Vancouver high tech community. I e-mailed Noulan on August 6, 2008 and asked him the following questions. His responses are listed below my questions:
1. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Ottawa and was fortunate to spend all of my summers at my grandparents cottage on the Ottawa River, where I came to love activities like boating and camping.
2. What did you want to be when you were a kid?
When I was three years old I had two passions. First, my father made a set of building blocks out of cut up 2×4’s for me and it was my favourite toy for a couple of years – I would spend hours building stuff in my room. Second, I loved to go adventuring and took to wandering away from home. I would typically wander quite a few blocks away and often into the forest – and when my mother couldn’t find me she would call the police for help. This happened several times, partly because I loved getting a ride home in the police car.
3. How would you describe to someone like me what you do for a living?
Because I still love building stuff and going adventuring, I became an engineer and took up selling high tech systems internationally. I have travelled in 40 countries, doing some sort of business in 27 of them. Part of my adventuring is being an entrepreneur. I have been on my own as an independent consultant since 1990 and since 1978 I have always been involved in buying, renovating and renting out residential real estate properties.
I have been a founder in two start-up companies and am looking for the next great opportunity to either found or get involved in an early stage company. As a consultant, I also help existing high tech businesses, ranging from small (e.g. 3 people) to large (e.g. BC Hydro), to be more effective in their marketing and selling or to initiate new products or expand into new markets. A high tech company is one that derives its competitive advantage through developing innovative technologies.
4. How would you describe what you do to someone who has no idea what your industry is about?
I help people who invent things to make money from them, by helping them invent a business to sell them. I also help existing high tech businesses to grow faster and make more money. Examples of high tech businesses are those that make new types of computer systems or cell phones.
