Volunteerism - Marketing That Money Can’t Buy
By crooky | June 7, 2008
One of the reasons that I didn’t post on Friday afternoon is because I was representing the SFU Alumni Association at the Spring Convocation Ceremony for Applied Science students at SFU’s main campus in Burnaby. I played a minor role in the ceremony - gave a short speech about life after university and the importance of our solidarity as alumni. I also handed up alumni pins to every graduate that crossed the stage and shook their hand. Not a big deal overall but before I took the stage to address over 400 students and over 1000 of their friends, family and loved ones - I was introduced by the President of the University who gave a mini bio for me and mentioned my consulting business.
The cost to me for this opportunity - one morning. Volunteerism is an admirable activity for volunteerism’s sake but a lot of people forget that volunteerism usually affords a few opportunities for marketing yourself that you can’t buy or earn any other way.
I’m very proud of my fellow alumni and now that SFU has crossed it’s 100,000th graduate across the stage, any activities that put me in the public spotlight as a member of the Alumni Association Board is an excellent opportunity to promote my business.
